BUY GOLD BULLION

Gold bullion has been associated with wealth for millennia. It was first used as a form of efficient exchange in the barter transactions of early civilizations before becoming the monetized coinage of empires and kings. Gold bullion was recently used to back the gold certificates issued by governments. Now, the fiat currency that replaced the gold standard is traded by investors for gold bullion as a real asset used to store equity, hedge against inflation, and mitigate risk during economically turbulent times.

Buying gold bullion allows investors to take possession of the physical precious metal. Investors select the purity, style, weight, and brand from MetalQuity’s varied portfolio of investment-grade gold bullion products which is suited for differing investment strategies and personal preferences.  Learn more about how to buy gold bullion.

GOLD BULLION PURITY

The purity of gold bullion is stated in two ways – karats or parts of pure gold per 1000 parts, its millesimal fineness. Investors can buy from a limited selection of 22 karat gold bullion, including the American Eagle that is .9167 fine gold. 24 karat gold provides investors a larger selection to purchase from, including the Chinese Panda Coin that is .999 fine gold or a purer PAMP Suisse Bar that is .9999 fine gold.

GOLD BULLION STYLE

Gold bullion is minted into rectangular bars (ingots) and round coins. Gold bars are minted by private refiners and sovereign mints in a variety of sizes. The premium per ounce is typically less for simply designed gold bars, such as the Perth Mint 1 oz Bar, than for intricately designed gold coins, such as the Perth Mint Australian 1 oz Kangaroo, even though both gold bullion styles have the same weight and purity. Gold coins are fabricated only by sovereign mints. Gold coins are monetized bullion with a face value worth only a fraction of the intrinsic value of their gold content, such as the American Buffalo with a legal tender of $50 containing 1 troy ounce of gold.

GOLD BULLION WEIGHT

Gold bullion is minted and cast in various sizes ranging from small 1 gram (g) coins to large 400 troy ounce (oz t) LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) Good Delivery Bars. Some of the more popular sizes are 1 troy ounce coins and 1 troy ounce, 50 gram (1.6075 troy ounces), 100 gram (3.215 troy ounces), 5 troy ounce, 10 troy ounce, and 1000 gram (32.15 troy ounces) bars. Larger bullion, such as the PAMP Suisse 1 kilogram (kg) Bar, benefit from economies of scale with a lower premium cost per ounce. Smaller bullion, such as the Austrian 1 oz Vienna Philharmonic Coin, provides greater flexibility when liquidating part or all of a position.

GOLD BULLION BRAND

Gold bars and gold coins are fabricated by private foundries and sovereign mints. There are many privately-owned foundries that produce gold bullion. It is important to buy gold bullion refined and fabricated by the world’s most trusted private mints that are ISO9001:2008 certified, such as Sunshine Minting, Inc. A third party’s extensive audit concludes the company’s quality management system meets the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization. Many governments operate sovereign mints that produce gold bullion. It is important to buy monetized gold bullion, such as the £100 British Britannia, that is produced by a reputable country’s mint, such as The Royal Mint of Great Britain, and is guaranteed by its government.

GOLD BULLION PRICES

The price of physical gold bullion is comprised of two separate values: the spot price of gold and the premium cost of the product. The spot price is the current value of the precious metal traded in world exchanges and reflects changing market conditions. The premium is the cost above the spot price that is charged by mints, wholesalers, and retailers. The purity, style, weight, and brand are contributing factors in establishing the premium of the physical gold bullion as are manufacturing, storage, and distribution costs, as well as any profit or gain realized or to be realized.

GOLD BULLION IRA

Do you know that you can buy gold bullion as an investment for retirement after making contributions or transferring or rolling over an existing IRA? The IRS, in the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, expanded the types of investments allowed in individual retirement accounts to include gold bullion, specifically American Gold Eagles. The IRS has since further defined the requirements of what gold bullion products are acceptable for inclusion in a self-directed gold IRA. The gold bullion must have a minimum millesimal fineness of .995 fine or be 99.50% pure. The American Gold Eagle is the only exception to the minimum fineness requirement with its .9167 fineness. The gold bullion must also be minted by either a private refiner/assayer that is NYMEX/COMEX approved with ISO9001:2008 certification or by a sovereign foundry of a stable nation.
